Do restaurant recipes have to be original?

Question by whitneyskywalker: Do restaurant recipes have to be original?
If a person were to open a small, independently-owned restaurant, is it a requirement to use only original recipes? I mean, obviously, you wouldn't want to copy the recipes from other restaurants or major chains, but is it legal to use a published cookbook for your recipes?

Best answer:
Answer by Welcome FallI don't believe that recipes have a copy write on them since anyone can make the recipe, but here's a hint, take a recipe and change just one thing on it, like instead of 1 tsp salt add 2 tsp for example and it's your recipe. It's as easy as that. My Dad who is a retired Chef who has owned many

Fried Rice - Restaurant Style?

Question by pfields425: Fried Rice - Restaurant Style?
Whats the secret ingredient in restaurant fried rice, cause whenever i make it w/ soy sauce, it doesn't taste the same that it does at a chinese restaurant. Any good recipes that taste like the restaurant?

Best answer:
Answer by Don't Take Me SeriouslyYou need to use lots of herbs. Put garlic, shallots, lemongrass, some ginger, salt, pepper, chili, and sugar in a blender. Heat some oil in a wok and stir fry the paste until fragrant. Add the soy sauce and put in the rice. Coat evenly.

I don't know the exact proportions... just adjust to your tastes. I think 3 shallot : 2 garlic : 1 lemongrass, something like that.

I want to bake a cake. Maybe buttercream. Does anyone have a delicious recipe complete w/ frosting?

Question by Leslie K: I want to bake a cake. Maybe buttercream. Does anyone have a delicious recipe complete w/ frosting?
I once ate this cake at a restaurant. (I've had a buttercream cake but this was the most amazing I've had!) She had a revolving dessert menu and her "famous" buttercream cake was a rare show on the menu. If she did have it that day...it goes in seconds. I'm 39 weeks pregnant and all I can think about is buttercream cake (but not the betty crocker recipe...it doesn't hack it)
Why do people ask a question to answer mine. What do you mean where did I learn to bake a cake? THAT IS NOT AN ANSWER!

Daniels: Candidates' stances on debt will influence decision on WH run - The Hill (blog)

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels (R) says that he will examine other potential 2012 presidential candidates' stance on the ever expanding national debt when deciding whether or not to enter the field.

A former budget director under President George W. Bush, Daniels said a lot remains unclear about the stable of potential GOP candidates who want to unseat President Obama.

"We don't know who the field is," Daniels said last week, according to the Associated Press. "We don't know exactly what they'll emphasize and what their depth of conviction and specificity of prescription will be about the problems that are bothering me, specifically the debt iceberg the nation's heading for."

Daniels has said he will decide in April whether or not to run, but his comments could provide more insight into his decision-making process.

Daniels said his decision could be influenced if "somebody really grabs hold and is willing to deal openly and honestly with the American people about what we're up against." But he cautioned that is too early to tell if that will happen.

Should he choose to run, Daniels would be a dark horse candidate in a GOP field that could contain former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. But Daniels enjoys support for fiscal hawks who are want drastic cuts to government spending.

Daniels in the past has shown reluctance with regards to entering the race, which could feature a crowded cast of challengers.

"The simple fact is I don't plan to do; I don't expect to do it; I really don't want to do it," he said in February.

Either way, Daniels is happy that no candidate has officially entered the race.

"I think it's a wonderful, merciful phenomenon that this particular race is starting at a more human, a more appropriate time for whatever reason," Daniels said. "The American people are being spared one of these three-year campaigns that we occasionally see. It's still probably going to be too long, but at least it hasn't started yet."

Coburn Sees Dire Scenario If Debt Isn't Cut - Wall Street Journal (blog)

By Jeffrey Sparshott

The U.S. could face 15% to 18% unemployment and a decline in economic output of up to 9% if political leaders in the coming years don?t make cuts to spending and slash the national debt, according to Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.).

?I think you?ll see the middle class just destroyed if we don?t do this,? Mr. Coburn said on ?Fox News Sunday.?

Mr. Coburn said international confidence in the U.S. economy and currency would be undermined if the nation doesn?t start down a road to austerity within three to four years.

The senator was a member of the White House debt-reduction panel and voted in favor of its plan released early this month to cut $4 trillion in debt. That bothered some conservatives because the plan includes ways to increase tax revenues as well as spending cuts.

Mr. Coburn on Sunday said he hopes President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress can work together next year on $100 billion to $200 billion in cuts that would be a ?down payment? on slashing the debt.

While some economists say it?s too soon to talk spending cuts with the economy still weak, Mr. Coburn disagreed. ?My hope is that [Mr. Obama] gets out, holds hands with us, and we make some significant cuts,? he said. ?There doesn?t have to be a standoff. What there has to be is real leadership and recognizing the serious nature and the urgency of our problem.?

Daniels: Presidential hopefuls must address debt - Fort Wayne Journal Gazette

INDIANAPOLIS ? Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels said he will be looking to see whether 2012 presidential candidates are adequately addressing the nation's ballooning debt as he decides whether to enter the race for the Republican nomination.

"We don't know who the field is," Daniels told reporters at his Statehouse office last week. "We don't know exactly what they'll emphasize and what their depth of conviction and specificity of prescription will be about the problems that are bothering me, specifically the debt iceberg the nation's heading for."

Daniels said it could influence his decision if "somebody really grabs hold and is willing to deal openly and honestly with the American people about what we're up against" ? and offers a constructive way to get out. But Daniels said it's too soon to tell whether anybody fits that description.

No Republicans have officially announced campaigns for the 2012 nomination, but the field of contenders could include former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Another Hoosier ? Rep. Mike Pence ? is also considering a run. Pence said after GOP victories in November that he was stepping down as the No. 3 House Republican leader and alluded to a potential bid for president or Indiana governor. He says he'll make a decision after Jan. 1.

Daniels said he's enjoying the fact that presidential campaigns aren't yet in full swing ? a contrast to the last presidential race when Republicans and Democrats jumped in just days after the 2006 midterm elections.

Daniels, who was federal budget director for President George W. Bush and a top White House aide to Ronald Reagan, has said for months that he has made no plans to run for president but simply agreed to keep the door open.

He says he's focused on Indiana and that he won't make a decision until after the General Assembly adjourns in April.

Daniels said running for governor ? which he said also wasn't his idea initially ? would be much different than running for president. That would involve leaving a state that "I lived in and planned to die in," Daniels said.

"It would involve dramatically greater sacrifice by my family," he said.

Stealing Trade Secrets?

Question by stelle d.: Stealing Trade Secrets?
I own a restaurant here in San Francisco. Recently, a young man working for me decided he wanted to open up his own restaurant. A few weeks ago, a manager also stepped down from his position and has since started working with the guy that opened his new restaurant. As of late, they have also taken one of my chefs. The restaurant is the same cuisine as mine, and since my cook has left, I have strong reason to believe that he is using my restaurant's recipes; cooking the same food he has cooked for 15 years at my restaurant, and using this in the new one. In a sense, it's as though the person is selling the food my restaurant is famous for,

NK risk, household debt top list of 2011 concerns - Korea Times

By Kim Tong-hyung

Geopolitical tension and ballooning household debt are the top economic concerns for South Korea heading toward 2011, according to a leading economic think tank.

The weakening recovery of the global economy and the strengthening Korean won, which may deteriorate the profitability of local firms, are issues that warrant close attention as well, the LG Economic Research Institute (LGERI) said.

?There is a possibility that the heightened geopolitical risk following the North Korean shelling of Yeonpyeong Island could spark capital flight and expand the ?Korea discount? on the stock market. The country?s household debt has been continuing to grow even after Korea?s exit from recession, and this, combined with the expected increase in interest rates and the future course of the housing market, represents an uncertainty with potentially serious consequences,? said LGERI?s Lee Chang-seon.

?The profitability of South Korean companies could slide rapidly being affected by sluggish global markets, higher interest rates and the strengthening local currency.?

The geopolitical risks, stoked by North Korea?s warlike provocations and nuclear program, growing household debt, and expectations of narrowed profit margins for local firms were among the seven major issues identified by LGERI that it believes could shape and define South Korea?s financial market and economy for 2011.

Other factors include the ongoing financial troubles in Europe; the possible ?side effects? from monetary policies of major economies such as the United States, European nations and Japan, which are likely to keep their key interest rates near zero for an extended time; and fallout from the global discussion on reforming the international monetary system.

?Among the PIIGS (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain) nations, two countries (Greece, Ireland) are already receiving European Union financial aid, and all eyes are now on Portugal and Spain ... It?s unlikely that the Euro Zone will be able to regain the confidence of the market in 2011 and the financial instabilities are likely to continue,? Lee said.

?Europe?s ongoing financial troubles will obviously have a major impact on the global economy and financial markets, and could also shake South Korea?s financial markets severely. A crisis in Europe could also lead to a retreat of the massive amount of Europe-based capital currently in South Korea. Korea could also lose a chunk of its foreign investment money should investors move increasingly toward ?riskless? assets.?

The South Korean economy had displayed durability despite North Korean antics in previous years, but Lee is among a growing camp of observers who believe that the effects of the recent cross-border clashes could be more profound.

The North Korean shelling of South Korea?s Yeonpyeong Island near the disputed maritime border last month killed four people, including two civilians, and left scores of houses destroyed. South Korea also holds North Korea responsible for the sinking of its warship, Cheonan, in May, which killed 46 sailors.

?Should the military clashes continue without a breakthrough in resolving the conflict between the two countries, the negative effects on the South Korean economy could amplify, which may lead foreign investors to bail from South Korean stocks, bonds and currency,? Lee said.

?The year 2011 will be a crucial period in determining the geopolitical situation on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the effect on the South Korean economy and financial markets.?

The country?s household debt has been rising at a rate of 12 percent per year since 2000 to reach 770 trillion won (about $670 billion) at the end of September this year. This, combined with spiraling house prices, represents a ticking time bomb for the South Korean economy, Lee said.

In a poll of 16 private and public economic research institutes conducted by the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI), the respondents picked the escalated tensions between the two Koreas as the biggest source of uncertainty for 2011, and job creation as the top priority for the economy in 2011. They also predicted the country?s economy to grow 4.2 percent in 2011.

Wyoming candidates didn't rack up debt - Casper Star-Tribune Online

CHEYENNE -- Wyoming candidates for governor this year spent a lot of money, including chunks of their own, but none came out of the election with crushing debt.

Gov.-elect Matt Mead spent $1.2 million of his own money on the Republican gubernatorial primary election. He spent zero of his personal dollars on the general election.

With four major Republican candidates for governor, campaign donations were spread thin and all of the candidates felt the pinch, Mead said.

The former U.S. attorney for Wyoming will be assume his new duties as governor Jan. 3.

State Auditor Rita Meyer, who lost the primary election to Mead by 714 votes, said she had some personal travel expenses left, but people stepped up and cleared that up.

"I'm very grateful to everyone who helped me do that," she said. "It's tough enough to lose an election, but to be left with debt is just another bitter pill."

"We were very careful about spending. We spent only what we had," she added.

State Auditor-elect Cynthia Cloud chose to keep Meyer's top staffers -- Vicci Colgan, chief of staff, and Carolyn Teeter, chief administrator, Meyer said. Both are at-will employees.

Meyer said neither was active in her campaign for governor.

"It's a pretty seamless transition," she said.

Meyer's future is in the private sector. She has taken a position with Casper businessman Mick McMurry effective Jan. 1 in a new organization dealing with permitting and the potential production for uranium development.

She will have offices in Casper and Cheyenne, the latter at the Jonah Financial Center.

She will continue on the University of Wyoming College of Business advisory board and has accepted an offer to serve on the regional board for Rocky Mountain Power.

Meyer said she had five great job offers but a couple involved moving out of state.

"I'm very, very fortunate to be able to stay in Wyoming," she said.

Avoiding temptation

Ron Micheli, a former legislator, director of the Department of Agriculture and rancher, said he and his wife, Patty, agreed from the beginning they were not going to go into debt. They did spend about $80,000 of their personal savings on the GOP primary campaign for governor.

Although he was heavily outspent, Micheli said he was pleased that more than 2,500 people contributed to his campaign.

Micheli said he and his wife were aware of the temptation to pump more and more money into a campaign, a move that led past candidates into debt.

"We saw it time and time again," he said. "We vowed we were not going to do that."

Micheli continues to be a full-time rancher in Uinta County.

As for the future, he said he wouldn't mind serving on a state board, but he doesn't want to head another state agency.

He moved to Cheyenne in 1995 to run the Department of Agriculture for the eight-year administration of Gov. Jim Geringer.

Colin Simpson, the outgoing House speaker and Cody attorney, said he spent $70,000 of his own money in his quest for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. He said he didn't incur any debt.

"I'm back to practicing law and spending time with my family and practicing my profession," he said.

Simpson said he has no current plans to run again for political office.

On the Democratic side, gubernatorial candidate Leslie Petersen said she spent about $20,000 of her own money on travel mostly.

"The schedule was so intense that I couldn't stay with people easily. I had to have wireless Internet, and I had to be able to stay up late answering all the questionnaires and election editions and all that," Petersen said. She has no debt, however.

"Right now I'm just enjoying my family and the holiday season," she said. "Right now I'm just coasting."

She said she did not step back into serving as chairwoman of the state Democratic Party. Chuck Herz will continue in that capacity. New officers will be elected in April, and the Democrats can decide then who they want as chairman.

Petersen agreed to be party treasurer. She said Jodi Guerin, a former mayor and city council member in Laramie, has been named vice chairwoman of the Democratic Party.

Guerin chaired Petersen's gubernatorial campaign and has a bright future politically, Petersen said.

File early next time

Pete Gosar of Laramie said he spent a few thousand dollars of his own money on his campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, which Petersen won.

"We're a big believer in non-deficit spending," he said.

He is a pilot for the Wyoming Department of Transportation and is writing letters to the editor that are critical of the state's congressional delegation.

Gosar, like Petersen, filed to be a candidate for governor at the last minute. He said that if he runs again for political office he will get in the race early.

Incoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Cindy Hill, a former Cheyenne junior high principal, beat out Republican incumbent Jim McBride to win the GOP nomination and went on to win the general election. She said she had no loans for her campaign.

Her campaign committee report with the secretary of state's office listed nearly $128,000 in contributions from Hill and her immediate family.

Hill's Democratic general election opponent, state Sen. Mike Massie of Laramie, said his campaign finished "in the black," thanks to an infusion of donations after his televised debate with Hill and a Casper Star-Tribune story that dealt with questions over the circumstances of her departure from the Cheyenne school district.

"It came in a bit too late" to be put to good use through media buys, Massie said.

"I gratefully appreciate every dollar," he added.

After all the bills are paid, he said he will offer to return large donations and will contribute whatever is left over to charities in Laramie.

Massie said he invested about $1,000 in his campaign but it cost him $20,000 in lost pay when he took a leave of absence from his job.

He works for a nonprofit organization for preschool education, a job he returned to two days after the general election.

"We were a typical middle-class family running a statewide campaign," he said. "We knew we couldn't match Cindy Hill."

McBride said he cashed in a $10,000 IRA to help pay for his campaign. Hill, he said, outspent him in the primary by about 4 or 5 to 1.

He said he has interviewed with Gov.-elect Matt Mead's transition team for a position in the new administration.

McBride, who served 26 years in the Air Force and retired as a full colonel, also cited his experience as a school district superintendent as well as six years as Wyoming state superintendent as qualifications for various state department director positions.

He and his wife, he said, moved to Wyoming to be near their children and grandchildren.

"The reason we moved here is the reason we want to stay," he said.
